The event was coordinated by Da Vine Student Ministry with the help of Multicultural Student Services.
Students marched from Goodson Student Union to the flag poles in front of Taylor National Free Enterprise Center.
Senior Richard Marks recited lines from the famous "I Have a Dream" speech.
Dr. L. Ranae Myles, assistant athletic director for academic success and senior women's administrator, followed by singing a favorite song of King's.
E. J. Junior, assistant football coach, prayed and read an email which challenged those in attendance.
The event ended with a balloon launch. This was not the first year students held a march and ceremony for King.
"I thought this was one of our best years," said senior Meilani Williams. "The message and speech given by the coach made each one of us reflect on all that Martin Luther King Jr. did, but beyond that it was a challenge to each of us to strive for God's best."
"I wish more people would have come out to support us," said senior Nora Scott. "I think schools should have more of a focus on Martin Luther King Jr. Day because it is a national holiday, and he played a major part in America's history."
"I know that the weather and everyone getting acclimated to school prevented many students and faculty from being there, but the turnout was still disappointing," said Williams. "There was a mixture of faculty, staff and students totaling to around 15 people. Compare that number to those that attend SBU, and it sadly speaks for itself."
Williams would have liked more students to show up, but was happy to honor Dr. King.
"I am glad to have been a part of celebrating his life and getting to fellowship with others," said Williams. "Although the turnout was not the greatest, we had a great time, and we just felt blessed to be at a school where we can all openly honor the lives of those who have made an impact on all of us."
Da Vine Student Ministry meets every Monday night at 8 p.m. in Goodson Student Union.
