Romney Suspends Campaign
Issue date: 2/8/08 Section: News
Former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney suspended his campaign for the Republican presidential nomination on Thursday.
In a speech to the Conservative Political Action Conference in Washington D.C., Romney said that he was dropping out of the race to avoid a protracted battle that could hurt his party's chances in November's general election.
"If I fight on in my campaign, all the way to the convention, I would forestall the launch of a national campaign and make it more likely that Senator Clinton or Obama would win," said Romney.
His departure solidifies even further Arizona Sen. John McCain's status as the Republican frontrunner.
Meanwhile, former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee's campaign has said he will continue to actively campaign for the nomination.
McCain asked Romney's supporters to join his campaign.
"You are welcome to join my campaign, and it will be a campaign based on conservative principles and a consequential election about the country's future," said McCain.
