Last week the Southwest Baptist women's track and field team competed at the Indoor Mule Relays on the campus of Central Missouri. For the meet, the women had nine personal bests, a school record, eight top-five finishes and two event champions.
"It is very hard to come from a 300-meter track and run on this track that is less than 200 meters," said Head Coach Corey McElhaney. "The turns are much tighter, and it takes a couple races to get use to. I am proud of the effort and the way the ladies came together as a team today."
Headlining the performances for the women was their domination in the mile run. Sophomore Courtney Ayers (5 minutes, 18.96 seconds), freshman Kelsi Chowning (5:19.02) and sophomore Chelsea Strahm (5:26.14) combined to take first, second and fourth in the race as Ayers and Chowning set indoor personal-records.
On the sprinters side of things, the trio of sophomore Jenny Blair, sophomore Jennifer Gillespie and freshman Kassidy Porter placed in the top-ten in both the 200 and 400-meter dashes. In the 200-meter dash, Blair took fifth in 26.7 seconds while Gillespie and Porter finished ninth and tenth respectively. In the 400-meter dash, Porter led the way for the Lady 'Cats by finishing in one minute and .37 seconds which was good for fifth overall. Right on her heels in the final standings were Blair and Gillespie who each crossed the line in just over 1:01.5.
In the 800-meter run, senior Alyssa Maggart lived up to her top-five ranking in the MIAA by finishing fourth in a time of two minutes, 21.03 seconds.
Also putting in strong performances for SBU were the distance runners. In the 3,000-meter run, sophomores Kristen Colon and Andrea Owensby and freshman Rebecca Brigance all set new personal-records. Colon placed ninth in 11 minutes, 17.77 seconds. In the 5,000-meter run, sophomore Erica Whitfield finished fourth in 19 minutes, 46.57 seconds and also set a personal best.
In the weight throw, sophomore Jennifer Golden broke her own school-record with a throw of 35 feet, 3.25 inches.
In the final event of the day the Lady 'Cats distance medley relay team destroyed their only competitor (Pittsburg State) by nearly 40 seconds to claim the victory.
