With the regular season coming closer and closer to completion, the Southwest Baptist Lady Bearcats find themselves getting stronger and stronger. Sitting at 17-4, they are currently in a three way tie with Washburn and Emporia State for first place in the MIAA. The Bearcats added two more wins to their season total last week with wins at a snow-blown Missouri Western State and a packed home court against Truman State on Saturday afternoon.
With the university closed on Wednesday, the road crews were still out in a blizzard of white in St. Joseph. School or not, the university decided to go ahead and play the game that night while pushing the seven inches of snow out of the way.
SBU started out strong yet found themselves down by as many as 10 points in the first half. However, SBU stepped up their defense and increase their press as they went onto have a 10-0 run that lasted four minutes to tie the game at 48. The Lady Griffons cut the SBU lead down to six with 1:47 left in the game, but the Lady Bearcats went 4-4 from the free throw line to ice the game. This win marked the first time SBU has swept MWSU since the '97-'98 season.
Junior Courtney Creed finished with 21 points along with three other Bearcats scoring in double digits.
"The press was the key for us tonight," said Head Coach Jim Middleton. "We were behind, but came out in the second half with great defensive intensity, and turned the game around."
Last Saturday, SBU had the opportunity to avenge one of its four losses on the season when the Truman State Bulldogs came to SBU.
With the night deemed as "Black-Out Night," the game went back and forth until senior Erika Souza hit two back-to-back three-pointers late in the game. Souza's six point streak would put SBU up by five, and they would hold on to win 87-82.
Souza was one of five Bearcats in double figures and finished with a 25 points. The Lady Bearcats are currently ranked fifth in the latest regional release.
Next up for the SBU is a home date with Missouri Southern at 5:30 p.m. Saturday.

Editor's Note: As of press time the Lady Bearcats lost to Washburn Wednesday night by the score of 74-62. The loss moves the Lady 'Cats to second place in the MIAA. This game will be covered in detail in next week's Omnibus.
