Forensics team hosts and wins tournament

Southwest Baptist University hosted and dominated in the annual Missouri Association of Forensics Activities Tournament on Friday, Feb. 15 and Saturday, Feb. 16.
The University's forensics team took home several individual awards as well as securing first place in overall team awards.
The many individual accomplishments of those on team helped SBU win first in individual events and second in debate allowing SBU a first place finish in the overall sweepstakes award.
"Doing our best in the MAFA State Tournament is an important goal each year for the SBU team, and we have a long tradition of representing our university well," said Dr. Bob Derryberry, director of Forensics and senior professor of Communication Arts. "I was especially delighted that all members of the squad contributed to the team's first place award. The evening of the awards assembly will remain a very special memory for the team."
SBU students won several first place honors. Senior David Van Bebber won first in dramatic interpretation. Senior Nathan Ross took first in after-dinner-speech (ADS). Freshman Tricia Coor won first among the debate speakers.
Sophomore Ryan Butler won first in the speech to inform. Senior Sean McCormack won first in communication analysis. Junior Becca Koe won first in prose.
The team of freshmen Andy Fetters and Justin Wessels won first in novice parliamentary debate.
Students also placed well in other events.
Van Bebber also took home second place in oratory, extemporaneous speaker, impromptu speaking and program of oral interpretation and fourth in poetry. Koe and Van Bebber also won second in duo interpretation. Ross won third in poetry and program of oral interpretation and placed fifth with Koe in duo interpretation. Koe placed second in poetry.
Freshman Caprice Applequist won third in ADS and fifth in the speech to inform as well as the title of top novice in ADS.
Fellow freshman Jordan Hart won third in communication analysis and fourth in oratory as well as the title of top novice in both events.
