Southwest Baptist junior Michael Pierce and senior Jim Grabowski have been named as the MIAA Athlete of the Week in their respective sports.
Pierce, a 5-foot-10, 135-pound junior from Gladstone, automatically qualified for the NCAA Division II national track meet in the mile with his effort at the Iowa State Classic last Saturday.
He finished ninth overall in the seeded section of the mile and was the second Division II runner to finish in the event with a time of four minutes, 7.80 seconds. He lowered the SBU record in the event, previously set by T. Jay Sanderson (4:08.12) in 2005.
Pierce is a graduate of Oak Park High School.
Grabowski, a 6-foot-7, 215-pound senior from Bolivar, averaged 17 points and eight rebounds as the 15th-ranked Bearcats regained sole possession of first place in the MIAA last Saturday.
He was one of three SBU players to post a double-double in the Bearcats' 85-75 home win over Missouri Southern last Saturday in a battle of the MIAA's top two squads.
Grabowski scored 15 points in the second half to help Southwest Baptist pull away from the Lions, making the team's only three three-point goals in the second half.
After being held scoreless in the first half of the Bearcats' 71-68 loss at Washburn Wednesday, Grabowski scored 10 points in the final 20 minutes and finished with six rebounds, five in the second half.
Grabowski is a graduate of Bolivar High School and transferred to SBU from Washington University in St. Louis following his freshman season.
