The Southwest Baptist baseball team took the field for the first time last Wednesday in Russellville, Ark. to take on the Arkansas Tech Wonder Boys in a doubleheader.
As could be assumed this time of year, the Bearcats had not seen much time on the diamond prior to the games due to the recent weather conditions. On the other hand, Arkansas Tech had already played five games before the opening pitch with SBU.
Senior James Ledford started on the mound for the Bearcats and gave SBU three scoreless innings. In the top of the fourth, the SBU offense that was led by multi-hit games from junior Jason Asher and sophomores Justin Barnhart and Kyle Howell broke through to score the game's first run.
However, in the bottom of the inning, Arkansas Tech touched up Ledford for three runs to make the score 3-1 after four innings.
Down by two going into the fifth, the Bearcats were able to respond with two runs but missed their opportunity at the big inning as they stranded runners to end the frame.
It was at this point that Ledford was done for the day, and everything began to spiral out of control for SBU. Ledford was replaced by freshman Colin Graham. Graham was rocked for four runs in one-third of an inning.
Offensively, the Bearcats had no real answer for the four-run inning put up by the Wonder Boys.
Arkansas Tech proceeded to put up four more runs in the sixth with the help of a few SBU errors and took the opener of the doubleheader by the score of 11-4.
Things did not get any better for the Bearcats in the second half of the twin-bill.
Junior Ray Kelly took the ball for SBU and gave up seven earned runs over four innings. He was relieved by sophomore Eric Wallace who did not fair any better as he allowed six earned runs in two-thirds of an inning. Junior Bobby McMillin was brought in to and he gave up one run over an inning and a third of work.
As the pitchers struggled on the mound, the SBU hitters struggled to get anything going at the plate in the second game. While the Bearcats did draw five walks, they managed just one hit for the entire game.
On deck for the 'Cats is a doubleheader starting today at noon against Minnesota State - Mankato.
