Road Trip

During, my past three years at SBU, I have heard many fellow students whine about how there is nothing to do in Bolivar. There are a few restaurants, bowling alley and Wal-Mart. Students are always looking for something to do.
This weekend, I have a solution:
Take a road trip to Kansas City to cheer on your men's and women's basketball teams in the MIAA basketball tournaments at Municipal Auditorium. Both teams enter their first-round games as the favorite due to their successful regular seasons. The women's opening round games were played last night while the men's tournament begins today. After the opening rounds, the men and women's semi-final games will be played Saturday with the championship games taking place Sunday.
The atmosphere at home games this year has been great. Why not bring that atmosphere to Kansas City? It is obvious the teams both enjoy the support and benefit from the energy. If you don't think you make a difference, look the teams' combined record at home this year: 29-1. Want more evidence that the teams want your support? All you have to do is check your school email that has been filled, on more than one occasion, with messages from junior forward Nick Kovacevich urging people to come out and support the Bearcats.
The other complaint I hear from students (and sports writers) around SBU is how they wish the Bearcats would be more successful. This excuse can often be heard across campus during the fall when a handful of students show up to a certain event that takes place on Saturday afternoons.
This excuse obviously doesn't cut it in this situation as both teams hold a legitimate chance of leaving Kansas City this weekend with trophy in hand.
The men's team enters the tournament ranked first in the conference and will take on Emporia State today at noon. In their previous two meetings, the Bearcats won by an average of 13 points. If SBU is able to take care of business against the Hornets, they will move on to play the winner of the Missouri Southern/Fort Hays State match-up at 6 p.m. Saturday.
