Battle of the Air Bands provides prizes

Two weeks ago when some students were packing for spring break, a few tooks some time to compete in the anticipated Battle of the Air Bands.
The battle took place Thursday, March 13 in Goodson Student Union. Junior Jared Kathcart, University Activities Council Campus Activities chair, emceed the event.
Five bands put on their best performances in front of approximately 100 students. Judges for the event were Kay Lockhart, Fresh Ideas cashier; Chris Keller, Residence Life housing director, and Rob Harris, dean of students. The judges' vote counted for half of the final score, and the students in attendance made up the remainder of the score after all bands had preformed.
"I think the bands had guts to perform [their songs]," said junior Katie Lannom.
Throughout the night, students had the chance to win prizes including iTunes giftcards, iPod Nanos, a surround sound system and the video game Rock Band. Free coffee and hot chocolate were provided for students to enjoy as the bands mingled among students vying for votes.
"I enjoyed the fact the band members were in character outside their performances," said freshman Aaron Hameister.
The second place band, which won $250, was Uncle Morty and the Bad Touch. The band consisted of juniors Brett Stump, Dane Cockrell and senior Jimmy Faseler. They sang a rendition of Hanson's song "MMMBop."
The first place band that took home $500 was Special Treat. The band won the crowd with their rendition of various genres including ballad, rap and country. The members consisted of sophomores Kurt Osterloh, Alex Merrell, Seth Tucker and junior Stephen Pollock.
