While many Southwest
Baptist students traveled home
for spring break two weeks
ago, the SBU men's basketball
team was on a plane headed
to Stephenville, Texas for the
NCAA Division II South
Central Regional Tournament
as they owned the fifth seed in
the region after being upset in
the first round of the MIAA
Tournament.
In the first round of the tournament,
the Bearcats took
it to the Buffalos from West
Texas A&M by a score of 95-
79. Junior Nick Kovacevich
was fiery hot from three-point
range finishing the game shooting
75 percent from behind the
arc and finished with a doubledouble
with 23 points and 10
rebounds.
In all, SBU had four of its five
starters finish in double figures,
with junior D'Ante Harris finishing
with 19 points and senior
Jim Grabowski netting 18.
For the Buffalos, Robert Lee
did most of the scoring, finishing
the game with 31 points and
10 rebounds.
The next night, the Bearcats
took the court against the hometown
and top-seeded Tarleton
State Texans. After jumping
out to a nine-point lead late in
the first half, SBU went into
halftime up by five points by a
score of 32-27 after a shooting
foul was called with no time left
on the clock, even though the
final shot of the half occurred
with two seconds left on the
clock.
With three minutes gone by
in the second half, the Bearcats
once again applied the pressure
to the Texans and led by 10
points, but amidst a few controversial
calls and no-calls (which
forced Head Coach Jeff Guiot
to plead for a technical foul),
the Texans went on a 17-3 run,
which gave them the lead by
four with 11 minutes left in the
game.
Even after the technical foul,
the calls still continued to favor
the Texans as sophomore Matt
Rogers picked up his third
and fourth fouls shortly after.
After a short stint on the bench,
Rogers came back in the game
