The women's track and field team ran into cold and windy weather conditions when they headed to the Missouri University Relays last weekend. With the temperature fluctuating between the upper 30's and mid 40's and winds gusting above 20 miles per hour, it made for difficult conditions for all competitors involved. Nonetheless, the Lady Bearcats did their best to put up solid performances and stay warm in between their events.
Friday started off for the Bearcats with a strong performance from sophomore Jenny Blair in the 200-meter dash. Blair placed fifth amid a contingent of numerous division I competitors and broke her own school record with a time of 25.55 seconds.
Also competing Friday for SBU was sophomore Kristen Colon in the 5,000-meter run. Colon placed 27th in the event and just missed breaking the 19-minute mark with a time of 19 minutes, .38 seconds.
Competition was started Saturday for the Lady Bearcats by sophomores Chelsea Strahm and Andrea Owensby in the university division of the 1,500-meter run. Strahm ran a very solid race to break the five-minute barrier and place second with a time of four minutes, 58.39 seconds. Behind Strahm was her teammate Owensby who placed 11th in a time of 5:16.92.
Next up for the women was freshman Kassidy Porter in the 400-meter dash. Going against a solid field, Porter was able to place 13th out of 31 competitors with a time of one minute, 2.68 seconds.
In the most impressive show of the day, the SBU trio of senior Alyssa Maggart, freshman Kelsi Chowning and sophomore Mallory Roth dominated their heat of the elite 800-meter run. Maggart used a late surge on the homestretch to pass her two teammates as she placed first in her heat and sixth overall with a time of two minutes, 18.64 seconds. Right behind Maggart was Chowing who finished seventh in a time of 2:19.03 and Roth who crossed the line in ninth with a time of 2:19.36.
After the 800-meter clinic put on by the Lady Bearcats, sophomore Jennifer Gillespie took to the track for her first try at the 400-meter hurdles in 2008. Gillespie turned in a strong performance and finished sixth in a time of one minute, 5.96 seconds.
The SBU women also put together 4x100 and 4x800 relay teams for the meet. In the 4x100, Porter, Gillespie, sophomore Katie Ware and Blair teamed up to place take fifth by crossing the line in just under 50 seconds (49.7). The 4x800 team of Maggart, Strahm, Chowning and Roth came together to finish third in nine minutes, 51.24 seconds.
Next the women travel to Joplin for the Missouri Southern Invite this afternoon.
