Last weekend, the men's track and field team traveled to Columbia to face strong competition at the Missouri University Relays. The competition included division I teams from Missouri, Kansas, Drake, Marquette and others.
Two-time All-American junior Michael Pierce started things off for the Bearcats Friday night in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 14 minutes, 55.45 seconds. Pierce's time was 10 seconds off of the provisional national qualifying mark and placed him ninth out of 65 competitors. Pierce's performance also ranks him first in the MIAA in the 5,000-meter by 12 seconds.
Also competing in the 5,000 was sophomore Michael McCampbell. McCampbell finished the 3.1 mile race in 15:26.96 seconds and took 22nd in the meet. McCampbell's time currently ranks him sixth in the MIAA.
A cold Saturday morning was started in solid fashion for the Bearcats as sophomore Jeremy Glassmaker ran away from the field in the men's university 1,500-meter run en route to a personal best time of four minutes, .92 seconds.
Next up for SBU was junior Jeff Weseloh in the 400-meter dash. Seeded with one of the slowest times in his heat, Weseloh used a strong second half of the race to make up a lot of distance on his competition. Coming down the homestretch, Weseloh took over the lead and finished first in his heat with a time of 51.7 seconds.
The 800-meter run saw four SBU runners toe the line. In the university division, junior Vince Tichenor led from the gun and never looked back. Tichenor won the university division by almost a full second in a time of one minute, 57.71 seconds. In the elite division, sophomore Shawn Etzenhouser and freshman Nathaniel Rogers squared off with a field composed mainly of division I and former division I runners. Etzenhouser, fresh off his trip to indoor nationals, ran a solid race to place eighth out of 16 runners in the elite division with a time of 1:56.05. Right on his hip was Rogers who placed tenth in 1:56.18. With these performances in the 800, the SBU men currently rank second, third and sixth in the MIAA.
