University awards three honorary doctorates

Southwest Baptist University awarded three honorary doctorates at a formal Founders' Day program held Wednesday, March 26 in Pike Auditorium. Honorary doctorate recipients were Phillip Franz, Gary Longenecker and Gary Black.
Dr. Gordon Dutile, SBU provost, presented Franz with his doctorate. Kenneth Howe, president of Holman-Howe Funeral Home, presented Longenecker with a doctorate and Ed Clark, SBU senior professor emeritus of accounting, presented an honorary doctorate to Black.
Black received a Bachelor of Arts degree from SBU in 1967. Following his graduation from SBU, he was employed by Fireman Insurance Company located in northern California. He remained at Fireman Insurance Company for 35 years until he retired in 2002 as president of claims.
In 2004, Black joined OneBeacon Insurance Company, headquartered in Boston, Mass., as managing director. He held this position until his second retirement in December 2006.
He is currently a member of the board of FlagstoneRe, a Bermuda-based insurance company.
He has served on numerous corporate and not-for-profit boards, and he has recently completed a 10-year term on the board of Golden Gate Baptist Theological Seminary in Mill Valley, Calif.
Black and his wife Jane, also a graduate of SBU, are both retired. They divide their time between their homes in Novato, Calif., and Springfield, Mo. They have two sons Gary Jr. and Patrick, two daughters-in-law Susie and Donna and four grandchildren.
A native Missourian, Franz has been associated with SBU since 1988 when he served his first term on the SBU Board of Trustees.
He served as vice-chairman in 1994-1995, and he is a current board member. He was awarded the president's medallion at SBU in 1996.
Franz Foods, Inc. in West Plains, Mo., is owned and operated by Franz. He has been a poultry trader for more than 28 years.
