The Southwest Baptist women's track and field team was led by senior Alyssa Maggart at the Missouri Southern Track and Field Festival last weekend. Maggart looked to be headed towards another solid performance as she sat in fourth place with 100 meters left in her 800-meter race. It was at this point that Maggart made her move towards the front of the pack. As the runners ahead of her battled for position and moved out of lane one on the homestretch, Maggart slid underneath her competition and passed them one by one. In the end, Maggart edged out three Oklahoma State athletes to claim victory. Maggart's time of two minutes, 15.66 seconds also broke the school record by almost a full second. Also performing well in the women's 800 were freshman Kelsi Chowning (fifth, 2:16.93), sophomore Mallory Roth (sixth, 2:17.75) and freshman Kassidy Porter (eighth, 2:19.02).
With the MIAA Outdoor Championships less than a month away, the SBU women look to be in great position in the 800-meters, currently ranking first, fourth, fifth and seventh in the conference.
After the 800-meter record had fallen, sophomore Courtney Ayers took aim at another record in the women's 3,000-meter run. Ayers used the help of a strong field to finish sixth in 10 minutes, 29.34 seconds and break the school record by four seconds. Sophomore Chelsea Strahm also turned in a top-ten performance by finishing eighth in 10:39.82.
The 1,500-meter run saw a strong group of SBU runners as the Lady 'Cats put three in the top five, led by sophomore Kristen Colon (second, five minutes, 10.54 seconds). The other women in the top five were sophomore Erica Whitfield (third, 5:16.44) and Rebecca Briggance (5:22.38).
The Bearcats had a strong showing in the sprints as well as Jenny Blair won the 200-meter dash in 26.09 seconds. Placing fourth in the 200 was sophomore Katie Ware in a personal-best time of 27.38.
Blair and fellow sophomore sprinter Jennifer Gillespie each placed second in an event as well. Blair took home second in the 400-meter dash with a time of one minute, 0.57 seconds, while Gillespie was second in the 400-meter hurdles in one minute, 4.42 seconds.
In the final event of the day, the SBU 4x400-relay team of Gillespie, Roth, Porter and Blair came close to a first place finish and school record, but narrowly missed both placing second with a time of three minutes, 59.2 seconds. The time does give the SBU women the fastest time in the conference this year.
Next up for the Lady 'Cats is a trip to Emporia, Kan. for the Emporia State Division II Challenge Saturday.
