MIAA baseball record broken
Issue date: 4/11/08 Section: Sports
The Central Missouri Mules and Missouri Western Griffons set an MIAA record for combined strikeouts in an extra-inning game when the two totaled 34 in the first game of their conference baseball series Friday, Apr. 4 at Crane Stadium/Tompkins Field, as the Mules claimed a 6-5 victory.
The previous record was 28 by UCM (17) and Fort Hays State (11) during a 16-inning MIAA Tournament game last May 11 in Warrensburg.
Central Missouri pitchers fanned 21 to tie the single-team record for a game, originally set on April 2, 1976 by Truman against Missouri-Rolla. All 21 in that game were by future Major Leaguer Bruce Berenyi, who played for Cincinnati (1980-84) and the New York Mets (1984-86).
The Mules were led by junior RHP Mark Carey, who pitched the first 7 2/3 innings and registered 13 strikeouts. Freshman LHP Tom Latimore fanned three of the four batters he faced in an inning and a third, while junior RHP Chris Matlock had five Ks in three innings as he earned the win.
Western senior RHP Chris Rusler started the game and sent 10 down on strikes in 8 1/3 innings. Senior LHP A.J. Huttonlocker struck out two in his inning of action while senior RHP Kyle Grup fanned one in two innings as he suffered the loss.
Junior DH Mike Hallam's 12-inning sacrifice fly provided the deciding run for the Mules, who ended up taking three of four in the weekend series and raised their record to 25-6, 14-2 in the MIAA. The Griffons fell to 11-18, 8-10 MIAA after the weekend set.
