Last Friday, the Southwest Baptist men's track and field headed to Joplin for the Missouri Southern Track and Field Festival. Unlike the University of Missouri outdoor meet, the Bearcats took their full contingent to Joplin to compete.
Although schools such as Oklahoma Wesleyan, Pittsburg State, Evangel and Fort Scott Community College were in attendance, the meet had the feel of a dual between Missouri Southern and SBU.
"This was a smaller meet so I had a lot of the athletes double and triple races," said Head Coach Corey McElhaney. "I am proud of everyone toughing through their second and third events."
Starting things off on the right foot for the Bearcats was sophomore Jeremy Glassmaker in the 1,500-meter run. Glassmaker entered the race ranked third in the MIAA with a time just over four minutes. In this race Glassmaker took the lead from the gun and never backed off the accelerator as he put distance between himself and Jon Garrett of Pittsburg State in the last quarter-mile. Glassmaker won the 1,500 in a personal-best time of three minutes, 57.76 seconds. Also placing in the top-ten in the 1,500 for SBU was freshman Nathaniel Rogers (fourth, 4:07.25) and sophomores Michael McCampbell (sixth, 4:13.85), Cameron Ayers (eighth, 4:16.73) and Jesse Kueker (tenth, 4:23.07).
Competing next for SBU was junior Jeff Weseloh in the 400-meter dash. Weseloh, who has recently been converted from an 800-meter runner to a 200/400-meter sprinter, used a strong second half to surge past his competition and take the win by .3 seconds with a time of 50.66 seconds.
On the heels of Weseloh's win the 400, junior Michael Pierce took to the track in the 800-meter run. Like Glassmaker in the 1,500, Pierce led the race from wire to wire and finished in a time of one minute, 55.37 seconds. Coming back after his win earlier in the day to finish third was Glassmaker who finished in one minute, 58.68 seconds.
Making his debut in the 400-meter hurdles was junior Vince Tichenor who placed fourth in just over one minute (1:00.15).
