Members of the Southwest Baptist University editorial staff of The Omnibus traveled to Missouri Southern State University (MSSU) in Joplin for the annual Missouri College Media Association (MCMA) conference on Saturday, April 12.
The conference was hosted by the newspaper at MSSU, The Chart.
Throughout the day the staff attended workshops on topics such as blogging and multimedia technology, learning from experts in the field.
"The blogging seminar was interesting," said senior Charlotte Holman, managing editor of The Omnibus. "It was encouraging to get tips from a blogger whose blog receives thousands of hits a day."
At the end of the day, Omnibus staff attended a banquet with keynote speaker Christopher Clark.
Clark has been working with the Associated Press for 12 years. He has been asked to edit and coordinate coverage for some of the biggest stories of the day. He was sent to cover Hurricane Katrina twice in 2005.
"I liked the fact that he was one of us," said junior Nicole Heitmann, Spotlight editor. "He sat in the same seats we are sitting in now. He worked hard and was dedicated to the field."
SBU brought home awards for the 2007-2008 school year. SBU alum Ben Nielsen won third place in Sports Column writing. Second place in Advertisement went to senior Mat Crouse.
Junior Steve Miller also placed second in Best Website. The second place in Information Graphic was given to junior Grace Jeoung.
The Omnibus won third place for Best Overall Newspaper in its division competing against such universities as Drury, Evangel and Park College.
New officers were elected during the business meeting, and next year's MCMA conference will be in St. Louis.
