The Southwest Baptist softball team went 1-3 this week against Truman State and Central Missouri and currently rank eighth in the MIAA.
The first game of the double-header against Truman State was a pitcher's duel as SBU freshman Josie Rose and Katie Noski of Truman State combined to pitch 13 innings, strikeout 16 batters and allow only two runs and seven hits.
Unfortunately for the Lady 'Cats, the two runs belonged the Bulldogs courtesy of SBU errors in the fifth and sixth innings.
The Bearcats' fortunes did turn around in the second game as they won a hard-fought game, 6-5.
In the second game, the Lady 'Cats were powered by their one through four hitters as sophomore McKenzie Mortimer, junior Erica Shabbing, junior Teressa Gomez and freshman Sarah Brison combined to go 8-13 with five RBI's.
Freshman Christy DeGano earned her second win for SBU as Rose picked up the save.
After the two close games with Truman State, things did not go quite as well later in the week as the Bearcats faced off with Jennies of Central Missouri.
In the first game of the double-header, the SBU offense was stifled by an outstanding performance by Central's pitcher Megan Leonard. Leonard tossed a complete game shutout, yielding only four hits while striking out 10 and walking none. Leonard's performance turned out to be plenty for the Jennies as they cruised to a 6-0 victory.
The second half of the double-dip saw the Bearcats take a momentary lead in the third inning after they put up three runs courtesy of a Gomez homer.
The SBU lead did not last long as the Jennies came back and put up a three spot of their own in the fourth, followed by two more in the fifth.
In the end, the Bearcats fell in the second game, 7-3 with DeGano picking up the loss.
Next up for the Lady 'Cats is a busy weekend as they host Northwest Missouri State for a double-header on Friday and Missouri Western for a double-header on Saturday. First pitch is at 3 p.m Friday and 1 p.m Saturday.
