Beasley Hall hosted its fifth annual Sweetheart Pageant Thursday, April 17 in Pike Auditorium.
"Around the World" was chosen as this year's theme. Each of the sixteen contestants, two from each hall, represented a different country.
The pageant began with introducing the girls wearing clothes native to their chosen country. The emcees for the evening were sophomores Seth Tucker and Stephen Lancaster.
Next was the talent portion of the competition. The talents provided a variety of entertainment. They included dancing, tumbling, Tae Kwon Do, singing, piano playing, poetry reading, comedy and stepping.
Throughout the evening door prizes were given away to members of the audience. These included gift certificates to local fast food restaurants, hair salons and Speedway Lanes, flower baskets, scrapbook kits, a bridal package and much more.
The girls changed into formal dresses and lined the stage. The judges chose the top five to advance. freshmen Amanda Mason, Baylee Anderson, Meredith Frost, Tracy Brown and Holly May Hays were the top five contestants. Judges for the event were Erin Waters, Casebolt Apartments resident director; Nicole Ward, director of discipleship ministries; Tom Stevens, professor of economics, and alum Kristen Blinzler, Miss Beasley Sweetheart 2006.
Each of the five girls drew a question from a box to answer. Before the winner was announced, a group of Beasley girls and Plaster men provided additional entertainment by dancing to "That's How You Know" from the movie Enchanted.
The top three places were then revealed. Mason came in third place. Hays was second place, and the 2008 Miss Beasley Sweetheart was Brown. The 2007 Miss Beasley Sweetheart senior Carly Breaux crowned Brown.
"I never would've imagined myself as a pageant winner," said Brown. "But I learned to let my personality shine through my insecurities and give all of the glory to God."
The cost for the pageant was $2, and all proceeds are going to the Casa Bernabé.
