Wednesday, April 23 over 500 students of Southwest Baptist University voted for the Student Government Association Executive Cabinet for the 2008-2009 school year.
Junior Jared Kathcart was elected Student Body President by a 60 percent majority.
"I'm ready to establish community on campus and improve the overall campus atmosphere," said Kathcart. "We've got a lot of good things going on this campus, and I want to foster those. I just want to pursue God's will for SBU."
Junior Becca Jarred will serve as Kathcart's vice president and shares his goal of building the SBU community.
"I'm excited to be a voice for each student on campus and begin fostering change toward a new community here at SBU," said Jarred.
Freshman Jordan Hart was elected student body treasurer and hopes to use his unique position to encourage relationship building between SBU and the Bolivar community.
"I want to give funds to organizations that are involved with the community," said Hart. "I want to give the community a chance to get to know SBU, and I want the organizations who are wanting to work in the community to get allocated funds to increase membership and get stuff done in Bolivar."
Junior Jessica Boucher was re-elected as student body secretary and is the only officer returning to the executive cabinet. Boucher seems to be on the same page as her fellow officers.
"I want to strengthen our current student leaders and facilitate a stronger community on campus," said Boucher.
Five-hundred twenty-seven students voted in the election, compared to last year's 353 voters.
Director of Student Life Zach Waters attributed this jump in voter participating to the online voting through Blackboard as well as the Rock the Vote campaign put on by SGA.
Mr. and Miss Southwest were also voted on Wednesday, but the results will be announced during Chapel Monday, May 5.
