Another MIAA record tied
Issue date: 4/25/08 Section: Sports
Emporia State senior RF Eric Shortell became the third player in MIAA history to hit four home runs in a single game as the No. 4 Hornets won their 34th consecutive game Sunday (April 20) over Northwest Missouri State, 20-3, in the first game of a doubleheader at Glennen Field.
Shortell, a native of Mission, Kan., drove in seven runs in the opener with his four four-baggers. He joins Central Missouri's Rick Ladjevich (Apr. 16, 1994 vs. Truman) and Tim Sheeler (Feb. 25, 1995 vs. Missouri) in sharing the league record.
After walking and scoring in his first plate appearance, Shortell came up again in the first inning and stroked a two-out, two-run homer to cap a 10-run frame for the Hornets.
He added a solo shot in the third inning, and had two more two-run home runs in the fifth and sixth innings.
As a team, Emporia State hit seven home runs, two shy of the MIAA mark of nine set by UCM in the same game Ladjevich established the individual record.
Shortell added two more homers in the second game -- a two-run shot in the fourth and a three-run bash in the eighth -- as ESU (42-3, 28-0 MIAA) rallied for a 10-9, 10-inning victory to extend its MIAA-best win streak to 35. Senior C Keith Hernandez hit a solo home run in the 10th for the victory.
