Issue date: 4/25/08 Section: Sports
The Washburn Ichabods claimed their fifth MIAA men's golf championship in six seasons, maintaining the 17-shot lead they held after two rounds to claim the MIAA Tournament Championship Tuesday, April 22 at Branson Creek Golf Club.
This is the third time in four seasons the Ichabods finished with a perfect score in the conference point standings and second in as many seasons. Washburn finished with 48 points as the top conference finisher in the five MIAA-sanctioned events (the MIAA Tournament Championship counts double).
Washburn and Central Missouri each carded four-man totals of 300 for the final 18 holes. The Ichabods finished at 884 (32-over par) while the Mules totaled 901 (49-over par).
UCM sophomore Justin Yoder carded an even-par 71 while WU senior Ryan Deutsch recorded a final round 75 as both ended the event with identical 54-hole totals of 217. In the playoff for medalist honors, Deutsch claimed the victory on the first hole of sudden death.
Freshman Chris Kovach of Truman logged his second 73 of the tournament to finish one shot behind Deutsch and Yoder. Missouri Southern senior Ben Perry had a final round 69 to match Deutsch's 69 in the second round for low round of the tournament and placed fourth with a 220.
Washburn sophomore Matt Lazzo placed fifth with a 221 and held on to claim MIAA Player of the Year honors with 37 points. He and junior teammate Matt Ewald, who placed 10th in the meet, were the only two players to score points in all five MIAA-sanctioned events in 2007-08.
Joining Lazzo and Ewald on the All-MIAA Team are Deutsch, senior John Robbins and junior Matt Salome of WU, Yoder and junior Ty Needels of Central Missouri, sophomore David Eddy and freshman Seve Smith of Missouri Southern and Kovach of Truman.
Kovach's third-place finish helped him claim the inaugural Freshman of the Year award as top-scoring freshman in the All-MIAA standings.
By virtue of his team's championship performance, Doug Hamilton of Washburn is the MIAA Coach of the Year.
