"The willingness with which our young people are likely to serve in any war, no matter how justified, shall be directly proportional as to how they perceive the veterans of earlier wars were treated and appreciated by their country," said our first President George Washington
This semester, an estimated 40 students on campus are veterans.
These servicemen and women have served their country and now come back as civilians, oftentimes having difficulty adjusting back to a normal life. Junior Brian Verslues, a former Marine, saw the need to reach out to veterans at SBU and decided to start the Society of Veterans.
"Our organization's functions are assisting veterans in the transition process from serviceman to civilian, supporting our troops through care packages and informing veterans of their benefits," said Verslues.
He hopes this organization will facilitate greater awareness about health and disability benefits.
The Society of Veterans has even networked with Jack Scott on the Mayor's Council for Veteran's Affairs to help.
Their first meeting is at 5 p.m. on Friday, May 2 in Goodson Student Union. The Society of Veterans will be discussing goals as well as getting input and ideas.
A long-term goal they have is to one day get the Marine Corps Silent Drill Platoon to perform in Southwest Missouri with an air show and guest speakers honoring veterans and those serving in the military.
Last week, at the budget and finance hearings, SGA approved the Society of Veterans for their benevolent goals with funding for $2,000.
Already, this club has caused a lot of buzz around campus by creating a Facebook group and the formation of officers with sophomore Michael Weeks as vice-president, sophomore Tiffany Stroud as secretary and Freshman Jim Shawley as student liaison.
A main objective of the Society of Veterans is a military Chapel service. With our country in multiple global conflicts with the "War on Terror," it is pertinent to recognize our students are fighting for our country in order to put a face behind the cause. The Chapel will heighten students' awareness of the military and also involve the sharing of experiences.
