The Southwest Baptist University Jazz Ensemble led students in worship for Chapel on Monday, April 28. Dr. Jeff Waters, chair of the department of music, led the ensemble through eight selections.
The ensemble's first selection was "Just a Closer Walk with Thee." This song was also played at their spring concert, which was in April. This song started out slow but picked up the pace and left a great first impression.
Waters spoke about how jazz is just one of many ways Americans can worship. Jazz music is based from different cultures but is distinctly American in its own right.
"When the Saints Go Marching In" was performed in a New Orleans style feel. The trombones were strong and blended well with the rest of the group.
Senior Nick Francis was featured on trumpet during the song.
Within several selections of music improvisation was displayed by the members of the ensemble.
The one non-worship selection was entitled "Are You Chicken?" The bass, tenor and baritone saxophones worked well together to bring out the bass part within the entirety of the song.
Junior Tad Griffin was excellent with his trombone solo. Griffin used great technique and tone throughout his part.
Overall Chapel was one to remember. The ensemble performed in many different jazz styles and really showed that jazz music can really be a way to worship.
