University Activities Council hosted the annual Songwriter's Showcase on Tuesday April 29 in Goodson Student Union. Sophomore Mally Ulm emceed the event that brought 16 songwriters out to display their talents.
Judging the event were senior Jessica Gibler, Juniors Jessica Boucher, Ryan Williams and Jared Kathcart.
The competition was based on lyrics, presentation and overall performance.
Approximately 100 students attended the event. Throughout the night, students were able to socialize and enjoy hot chocolate, coffee, cheesecake and cookies.
Junior Philip Enloe played his song inspired by Kurt Caddy's spiritual formation class and the "ultimate question."
He used an electric guitar and petals to create a good quality sound.
Evan Rogers brought his soothing voice and guitar skills to a great lullaby-sounding style song.
Sophomore Matthew Rogers and senior Caleb Martin brought their passion for worship and played songs they created based on Scripture. Rogers and Martin's songs had great lyrics that focused attention not on themselves but on God.
Sophomore Sara Weldy sang her song "Don't Forget the Girl Child."
Within the song she featured three types of girl children and their struggles to get out of the horrible circumstances theyfound themselves in.
The song was created after learning about the horrible circumstances girls around the world face.
Sophomore Neil Brooks surprised me the most with his song.
The song had great lyrics and his voice gave an edge that added a needed punch.
After all performances were finished, the judges deliberated as to who would win the competition.
Senior Audra Spain won second place and 100 dollars with her song entitled "Prodigal." The song was inspired from her own personal arguments with God about life.
Freshman Amber Dlugosh won first place and 300 dollars with her song she wrote especially for the event entitled "Front Page Blues."
The song featured several names all representing one of her friends. Dlugosh closed the evening with an encore performance of her winning song.
