Southwest Baptist University hosted the annual Masterworks concert Friday, May 2 in Pike Auditorium.
The Masterworks chorus and orchestra performance of "Magnificat in D," by J.S. Bach, and "Jubilate Deo," by Mack Wilberg was excellent. The chorus and orchestra were conducted by Dr. James Tarrant, associate professor of music.
The concert, which has been an event at SBU for almost 40 years, is a conglomeration of the University and the community working together to bring a truly unique and pleasant experience to students and members of the surrounding community.
Every contributor to the show did an outstanding job. The four singers, Dr. Kathy Brown, professor of music; Laura Compton, director of opera studies; Andrew Campbell, assistant professor of voice, and Joseph F. Wooderson, music minister at First Baptist Church, gave stunning performances of "Magnificat in D." All four of the accomplished singers presented different parts of the piece, according to the type of singing voice each person possesses. Also, the chorus parts of the piece were sung by the choir who did a wonderful job.
The orchestra did a very good job playing the music. The harpsichord, violins and flutes seemed to stand out the most. The harpsichord, which is the predecessor to the piano, offered a very distinctive sound to the "Magnificat in D" piece.
The hard work and dedication of the performers were evident in their wonderful presentation of the two works of art. The two pieces were picked because of the worship element built into each song. "Magnificat in D" was created by Bach to celebrate the Christmas of 1723
The crowd was a mixture of young and older people. Many SBU students were in attendance as well as people from the community. The crowd held the applause until the end of show but gave a very lengthy and deserved ovation at the end. Although the concert did not last long the time spent was well worth it.
