Dr. C. Pat Taylor, Southwest Baptist University president, reported the decisions made during the last Board of Trustees meeting of the 2007-2008 year on Wednesday, May 7.
There were six main decisions discussed and voted on by the Board members.
Of these six action items, the last item is of interest to the student body.
Each year SBU has been paying credit card fees due to students paying for tuition and other school payments with credit cards.
Since 2001, these costs have risen very high.
This year, SBU had to pay about $83,000 to credit card companies because of credit card use on campus.
The Board decided that there should be a change in this area because the predicted costs of these fees are expected to rise.
As of Jan. 1, 2009, students will be charged for using their credit cards.
This is so students who pay with checks or cash will not have to carry the collective burden of credit card fees companies have been charging the University.
The budget of slightly $40 million includes a five percent pay increase and $417,000 in capital improvements.
The Board also decided to send a $5,000 check to Union University.
Union has an estimated $20 million in damages and repairs, and has received only $5 million. As a sister school, SBU feels this donation would be an excellent, Christian decision that would benefit Union University and its students.
Another action item shared with faculty and staff is how the Future Fund was going to be used.
The Future Fund was created when there was a positive budget margin left over from other school years.
This year, the interest earned on that money will be used for a three-year project to create storage areas for the University's large amounts of data.
The Board felt this was necessary because in the case of a natural disaster or other destructive occurrence to the Sells Administration Building, there would be three backup plans to keep the SBU computer system working, insuring no data would be lost.
Dr. Taylor also mentioned the placement of Automated External Defibrillators (AED) on campus. An AED is used in the occurrence of life threatening cardiac arrhythmia.
It uses electrical therapy to reestablish an effective heart rhythm.
However, AEDs will only be placed in key points on campus, and only be used by trained professionals.
Three sites have been considered to place the AEDs, these are the Killian Health Center, the Meyer Wellness Center and SBU security vehicles.
The cost of an AED is between $1,200 and $1,800. When these defibrillators will be purchased and placed on campus is still uncertain.
