The Southwest Baptist baseball team rounded out their season this past weekend with a four game series against the Griffons of Missouri Western. Much like the season, the weekend series showed glimpses of the Bearcats pounding the ball, but the success was not long-lived.
"We didn't play poorly except for the last game," said Head Coach Sam Berg. "They just hit the ball and played comfortable because they had just clinched the fourth spot in the conference tournament. It was typical of our season. Friday night we won when our whole line-up contributed. The kids played hard though."
The weekend started out with the Bearcats falling behind early in the first game of the double-header on Friday. After falling behind 6-1 through three innings, the 'Cats were unable to recover and fell by the score of 7-1.
In the nightcap of the double-header, the SBU offense exploded for 14 runs on 17 hits. Leading the hit parade was senior Chris Martinez who went 5-5 with a double and six RBI's. The Bearcats did most of their damage in the third inning when they were able to plate nine runs on six hits.
Unfortunately for the 'Cats, the offense they displayed Friday afternoon did not carry over to the double-header on Saturday. The Griffons won the games on Saturday by the scores of 7-2 and 14-2.
The end of the series with Missouri Western marks the end of a somewhat forgettable season for the SBU baseball team in which they went 11-33 and 9-27 in MIAA play.
"This season wasn't up to the standard we set," said Berg. "A lot happened that was out of our control, like kids quitting. A lot of the games this year could have gone either way and we just didn't take advantage. Hopefully we'll bounce back."
With the 2008 campaign in the books, it is time to look towards 2009 for Berg and his staff.
"We have a good nucleus coming back," said Berg. "We have signed eight hitters and five pitchers so far, and we are still working on a 7-8 more to add more depth to our team."
As for those leaving the SBU team, senior James Ledford was recently drafted in the second round by the Kalamazoo Kings of the Frontier League. Another player who might have baseball in his future is senior Brad Mountjoy.
"Mountjoy is looking around," said Berg. "He is waiting for the draft. He played hurt all year and was never 100-percent. I think he's got a shot to play at the next level. If he's not drafted, he'll get invited to some tryouts."
Replacing Ledford, Martinez and Mountjoy will be a difficult task, but the Bearcats will look to move on in 2009 as they forget the difficult 2008 season.
